Get Ready to Sob Like a Baby

Still in the spirit of Thanksgiving and counting my blessings, this New York Times story, War's Other Enduring Videos, about soldiers surprising their families by coming home early from war made me cry like a baby (or like when I watch Sleepless in Seattle).

One of the little girls is even from Randolph Air Force Base (in San Antonio) where I went to school (indeed, I am an Air Force brat). Her reaction is priceless. I was very lucky, as my Dad was always around (for better or worse -- kidding, Dad!), but to see that these families go through these emotional ups (Daddy's home!) and downs (Daddy's leaving -- again) all the time is really mind-boggling and touching. A big salute to all of our troops and their brave families for their sacrifices. Hold your loved ones tight this holiday season -- and always.

Thanksgiving Wishes and Crack-n-Cheese

Happy Thanksgiving, pumpkins. I hope you're surrounded by family and friends, delicious food and the spirit of thankfulness.

I'm thankful for many things -- my crazy family, my wonderful, silly, patient husband, my health, and I'm thankful for you. It's a great honor to be able to do what I love every day and I have you to thank for it. So thank you.

Are you hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year? If so, good luck. And remember, if you give your guests enough to drink, no one will notice (or mind) any culinary hiccups along the way.

While I'll be leaving the turkey to the pros, I'll be taking a stab at Martha Stewart's Perfect Macaroni and Cheese recipe. I'm pretty sure mac-n-cheese is a southern tradition for Thanksgiving, but it's a tradition worth spreading far and wide. And if you read the history of mac-n-cheese (or crack-n-cheese as it's so deservingly called), it seems appropriate today. Here's to both old traditions and starting new ones.

Wishing you lots of love and elastic waistbands xx,
Kelly

Perfect Macaroni and Cheese

Serves 12

6 slices good-quality white bread, crusts removed, torn into 1/4- to 1/2-inch pieces
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, plus more for dish
5 1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
4 1/2 cups (about 18 ounces) grated sharp white cheddar
2 cups (about 8 ounces) grated Gruyere or 1 1/4 cups (about 5 ounces) grated pecorino Romano
1 pound elbow macaroni

1. Heat the oven to 375 degrees. Butter a 3-quart casserole dish; set aside. Place bread pieces in a medium bowl. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons butter. Pour butter into the bowl with bread, and toss. Set the breadcrumbs aside. In a medium saucepan set over medium heat, heat milk. Melt remaining 6 tablespoons butter in a high-sided skillet over medium heat. When butter bubbles, add flour. Cook, stirring, 1 minute.

2. Slowly pour hot milk into flour-butter mixture while whisking. Continue cooking, whisking constantly, until the mixture bubbles and becomes thick.
3. Remove the pan from the heat. Stir in salt, nutmeg, black pepper, cayenne pepper, 3 cups cheddar, and 1 1/2 cups Gruyere or 1 cup pecorino Romano. Set cheese sauce aside.

4. Fill a large saucepan with water. Bring to a boil. Add macaroni; cook 2 to 3 fewer minutes than manufacturer's directions, until outside of pasta is cooked and inside is underdone. (Different brands of macaroni cook at different rates; be sure to read the instructions.) Transfer the macaroni to a colander, rinse under cold running water, and drain well. Stir macaroni into the reserved cheese sauce.

5. Pour the mixture into the prepared casserole dish. Sprinkle remaining 1 1/2 cups cheddar and 1/2 cup Gruyere or 1/4 cup pecorino Romano; scatter breadcrumbs over the top. Bake until browned on top, about 30 minutes. Transfer dish to a wire rack to cool for 5 minutes; serve.

NYC Food Files: Best Sundae In the City

The perfect ice cream sundae everytime? The NoHo Star's Hot Fudge Sundae (we replace the vanilla ice cream with coffee ice cream and oh-my-gawd).

Perfect to share or to have solo, The NoHo Star is always an interesting mix of neighborhood locals.

NoHo = North of Houston, for the curious, and was my old nabe, sniff, sniff. Perhaps it will be again...

NYC Food Files: Best Chocolate Chip Cookie

The quest for a chocolate chip cookie as good as Mom makes ends at The City Bakery (I believe the SATC girls declared the Best Brownie here, but the giant chocolate chip cookies are where it's at).

Have it. Embrace the gooeyness. Ignore that you can see the butter in it and just enjoy every single morsel. Endorphin rush. Smile. You're welcome.

NYC Food Files: Best Burger Ever

Leaving New York is always hard, but this time it was harder than expected in no small part to all of the great food we consumed while there (er, I mean we'll really miss our friends and all the culture, er...).

Since it's Thanksgiving Week, I'd thought now would be the perfect time to share my favorite New York eats with you. My own Best Of New York Dining, if you will indulge me and your taste buds. From New York classics to those hidden neighborhood gems, a delectable guide to eating in the Big Apple.

First up, a hotly contested category: Best Burger. Well, to be more specific, Best Veggie Burger, as I can only take my hubby's word for the beef option (his word: yum!).

And the award for Best (Veggie) Burger goes to...Shake Shack's 'Shroom Burger.

Believe me when I tell you that you won't even miss the meat, as the scrumptious crisp-fried portobello 'shroom burger is stuffed with cheese. Molten cheddar and muenster cheese that oozes out with each bite to be exact (topped off with lettuce, tomato and Shack sauce). It's so good, I had it three times in 10 days (um, for research purposes?). That should say it all right there, and might also provide some insight into why I might keel over of a heart attack before my 32nd birthday.

The chocolate shakes and fries are great too. Plus, for New York, it's a bargain meal. The original Madison Square Park location still has lines around the block (yes, even in these wintry temps; you can see them for yourself on the Shack Cam), but the new Upper West Side location never takes more than a few minutes. Plus, you can even order beer and wine, though I save my calories for the shakes.

Seating can be limited, but with plenty of park benches across the street in front of the Natural History Museum, not to mention Central Park a block away, you can make a picnic out of it, especially come spring.

Not only does Shake Shack deserve the Best (Veggie) Burger Ever award, it also deserves the Best Fast Food and Best Bargain Meal awards. Congrats, Shake Shack. And thanks for always being so fantastically good.

This Is Why You're Fat: Cupcake Kebobs

A friend sent over this great photo today of Cupcake Kebobs. Yes, Cupcake Kebobs! From the great site This Is Why You're Fat.

It really hits home after a week of indulgence here in New York and couldn't be more appropriate for Thanksgiving week, where the whole point has turned into seeing how much we can stuff in our pieholes. If you're interested in seeing a Giant Oreo Cookie Cake, Banana Peanut Butter Cup And Marshmallow Grilled Sandwich, a Twinkie Casserole or more "junk food porn", check out the blog or book here.

Paris In New York: Coco Before Chanel at The Paris Theatre

One of the great pleasures of New York is the ability to be spontaneous at a moment's notice. Such was the case last night, after catching up with great friends at dinner. The Hubby and I were going to call it an early night, but while walking home from the Upper West Side to the Upper East Side along Central Park, made an abrupt change of plans when I saw that Coco Before Chanel was playing at the Paris Theatre. I've been dying to see the Audrey Tatou film (how cute is she, really) and despite big 10 minutes late, I'm so glad we popped in.

The Paris Theatre is a little New York gem and is the oldest continuously operating art house in America (over 60 years old). You may remember it from the Sex and the City episode when Carrie has a date with her city. She muses "the most amazing thing about living in a city like New York is that any night of the week you can go to Paris."

Old-school with a smidge of glamour, there is only one screen at The Paris. And there's a balcony, which was such treat to have all to ourselves. I loved it. Even if I would have hated the movie (which I did not), the atmosphere and experience would have made up for it. And what better place to see a film on the life of Coco Chanel than at The Paris?

If you're in New York, skip on over to The Paris for a rendezvous with Coco.

The Paris Theatre is located right across from The Plaza, just west of Fifth Avenue.

More on The Paris here.

Kate Moss Smells...Old? And SJP Smells Like...Can You Guess?

Kate Moss is debuting her new fragrance, called, wait for it...Vintage. I love vintage fashion, but we all know walking into a vintage shop has a certain...aroma. So I'm not sure how much sense it makes to name a scent something that traditionally doesn't smell so great. But, like all things Kate, I'm sure it will be a huge success.

She chats up WWD about Vintage here and shares her motto which made me nearly spit out my Cheerios: "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." Perhaps I should tattoo that on the inside of my wrist.

And, earning the Understatement of the Year award: "I'm not traditionally a beauty, but apparently people think I'm all right."

Yeah, I'd say so. I love you, Kate.

Hot on the Manolos of Kate Moss, everyone's favorite SATC star, Sarah Jessica Parker, is debuting her newest scent too, called NYC. I love New York and sometimes the smells are great (an intoxicating mix of ethnic foods and grit), but let's all hope Sarah Jessica Parker's NYC doesn't smell like a New York City subway in August.

SJP NYC will be available in February 2010, just in time to get SATC fans excited about seeing Carrie Bradshaw and friends in the May sequel to Sex and the City: The Movie.

Kate Moss Vintage available now.

Lady GaGa Nude at Vogue?

Did you see The September Issue and also fall for Grace Coddington? She's brilliant and lovable. So anymore glimpses into her world or the world of Vogue is like Christmas come early.

So when team Vogue sent us this video to share with you, I was excited to see what they'd been up to. More fabulousness, of course.

Here, Grace Coddington and Annie Leibovitz discuss the making of the December Arts Issue, featuring Lady Gaga, Cate Blanchett, Lily Cole and more. By and more, let's just say Lady GaGa shows up in a white rubber coat with absolutely nothing on underneath.

I'm looking forward to seeing the entire Arts issue (out November 24th), especially the Hansel and Gretel spread with model Lily Cole (who looks like a young Grace Coddington, doesn't she?).

Enjoy the video above or watch it on Vogue.com.

Also check out this slideshow of the Hansel and Gretel spread, along with an interview with the one and only Lady Gaga.

Bananas for Savannah

Sophisticated. Stylish. Southern. Not three words that often pop to mind together. But that's exactly what we found Savannah to be -- not to mention charming and beautiful. We only had a day and a half to explore, which caused the Savannah skies to cry, naturally (i.e. it was raining -- sideways), so we saved the beaches for another time.

A design-minded friend, the brilliant Rena Tom of Rare Device, suggested Papillote for a yummy casual lunch on Broughton Street.

It was fresh, french and fabulous, with brioche to die for, and macarons compliments of the chef (merci!).

After a looong nap (three days at Disney World had both The Huz and me under the weather), we tried to heal ourselves with southern cooking at Paula Deen's restaurant The Lady and Sons. I have three words for ya'll: buttah, buttah, buttah. The buffet was basically Thanksgiving on a plate -- I thought it was pretty good, the hubby was overwhelmed by the butter and salt content. All I know is that after a swig of Grand Marnier (in place of Nyquil), I felt much better. Was it the hoecakes ya'll or the GrandMa? The mystery lives on...

The next day, we got to check out one of my favorite online shops in person, shopSCAD, where we scoped out handmade goodies designed by students and alumni of the the Savannah College of Art and Design.

We were pleasantly surprised to see a book by an old friend and coworker on the shelves, too.

We followed up our shopping with tea and reminiscing at Gryphon Tea Room, taking in not only delectable treats and design (love those bright orange chairs), but the fabulous style of the Savannah crowd (understated panache, anyone? Methinks The Sartorialist needs to make this his next destination, as the gentlemen really had style in this town).

We didn't have time for more shopping, dining and sightseeing on this trip, but would love to go back in the spring and have already ordered Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and will be hitting up some of the spots on Design*Sponge's great Savannah City Guide.

Have you been to this southern gem? Are you bananas for Savannah too?

To Botox or Not To Botox, That Is the Question

A good mother-in-law TiVos Mad Men for you while you're traveling abroad for two months. A great mother-in-law TiVos Mad Men and Gossip Girl and Project Runway. The best mother-in-law ever TiVos Mad Men, Gossip Girl, Project Runway and Regis and Kelly for you because she knows about your SSB. I'm a lucky girl indeed to have the best mother-in-law (and father-in-law) ever, especially considering the typical mother-in-law stereotypes out there.

After a long drive back from Orlando via Savannah to Greensboro, Georgia (long because it was raining and I had a head cold that made me feel for Sneezy -- imagine that after three consecutive days surrounded by thousands of kiddies at Disney World), I was happily curled up on the couch getting my Regis and Kelly fix as I sucked down Luden's cherry cough drops (so they're like candy, I swear by them for a sore throat). Regis and Kelly are doing holiday makeovers this week and I was astounded, dumbfounded, astonished, oh my, by the results of one woman, Karen Ann Smith.

Granted, she was pretty to begin with, but Lawrence Zarian & Co. took her from drab to fab with the help of a little hair dye and makeup, some teeth brightening, a snazzy new dress and, most importantly, Botox.

Now I've never been one to believe in plastic surgery or any of that who-ha (of course, that was easier to say in my twenties), but this makeover has me thankful that I have the choice to inject Botulism into my face some day.

Mostly I was surprised that Dr. Brandt gave her a whopping 18 (yes, 18!) injections and her face wasn't that paralyzed look you often associate with Botox (hi, my eyebrows never move!). Given that no knives or anesthesia are needed, what do you think... to Botox or not to Botox, that is the question?

Caravan: House Swap for Creatives?

I've raved so much about HomeAway that I'm expecting a call any day now to be their spokesperson (anyone, anyone, Bueller? Bueller?). But Holly tipped me off to Caravan, which has me intrigued.

Described as a "craigslist for creatives," fellow artists, media and creative types can swap homes or rent them for very affordable rates. If you're a writer in New York, you can swap with an art director in Paris, for example.

I wouldn't mind staying in this converted church in Melbourne for, oh, say, months on end.

Considering that creatives tend to have really cool spaces, I'm quite excited about this venture and hope that it takes off. You too? Would you swap or rent out your space?

Style Crush: EmersonMade

We featured flower girl EmersonMade last month and I've been style crushing ever since.

And after our recent travels through the south, I'm wondering if I could trade in city life for the country life? I'm not sure that worked out so well for Zsa Zsa...

Either way, I am feeling like I would happily trade my entire wardrobe for hers (Kate Spade meets Banana meets J.Crew meets vintage?). The preppy panache is sophisticated, quirky and original all at once.

And if I had an "office job" that was more on the conservative side, I would steal her profesh look in a heart beat. In fact, I might just have to grow this venture called BussBuss into an empire so I can wear these looks. It's good to have goals.

I might need to dye my hair blond and get married again too (to the same gent, of course).

Or maybe just sip some champers.

How to Wear Red Lipstick

I'm more of a ChapStick girl than a red lipstick girl, but that's mostly due to fear. Red lipstick can so easily go wrong. You always hear it's all about the right undertone for your skin tone (orange versus blue), but that turns out to be more complicated when 20+ shades of red are staring you in the face. However, this woman, captured by The Sartorialist, makes me want to finally take the leap. What about you? Are you seeing red?

My SSB (Secret Single Behavior)

Remember the Sex and the City episode where Carrie talks about her SSB, secret single behavior? When alone, Carrie enjoys eating jelly on crackers while standing up and reading Vogue? Which she finds quite hard to do when that darn sweetie pie Aidan is hanging around all the time.

Well, my secret (married) behavior is that I'm an in-the-closet Regis and Kelly addict (where's Dr. Drew when I need him?). I can't help it. I'm not exactly the key demographic, being child-free and all (not to mention I'm never up in time to see Live with Regis and Kelly live and have to TiVo it), but I love my daily dose of Regis and, yes, Kelly, too. There may or may not be a giant bowl of Cheerios involved with this SSB. Or Cookie Crisp, given the obsession of the moment. And perhaps even a little fantasy of being a talk show host myself (dream job!).

Whether you watch or not, I feel compelled to share one of the best after-the show parts of my SSB with you. It's called Kelly's Fashion Finder, your daily guide to Kelly's style, and is basically a daily video blog where Kelly tells viewers what she's wearing (on the show). It's genius because it's so simple. Why don't all shows do this (I'm looking at you Mad Men and Gossip Girl)?

The quick one-minute recap of what Kelly Ripa is wearing is great if you actually want to get the look yourself or are just curious about who designed those fabulous shoes. I may or may not have watched hours of these videos, as well as Guest Fashion Finder, on a rainy day in Paris (Musee d'Orsay, who?).

But it was all in the spirit of "research," as I knew I wanted to share Fashion Finder with you, dear readers (I think Dr. Drew would call that rationalizing). Whatevs.

The Guest Fashion Finder is really fun. You can spy quick interviews with fashion experts like Rachel Zoe, Tim Gunn, Whitney Port and Michael Kors, plus in'vus with fashionable guests like Reese Witherspoon, Heidi Klum, Kate Hudson and more.

I love it so much (d to the o-r-k, I know) that I'm even contemplating videoblogging what I wear each day (in case anyone's interested -- Mom?), but it was challenging enough doing Style on the Road. The pressure to look presentable was good for me, but also, as one might imagine, time consuming. If it's something you might like to see, let me know on Twitter or Facebook.

More importantly, now that I've dished my SSB, it's your turn. What's your Secret Single Behavior? Tell me on Twitter or Facebook -- I can't wait to know!

A Stroll Down Fashion Memory Lane with French Vogue

The Champs-Elysees. Fabulous. Vintage Vogue covers. Fabulous. Being able to enjoy blown-up vintage French Vogue covers while strolling the Champs-Elysees? Priceless.

The covers are part of French Vogue's celebration of their 90th anniversary (with the retrospective being called simply Vogue Covers). The exhibit flaunts 122 poster-sized covers dating from 1920 and ran the entire month of October (as if October in Paris wasn't stunning enough on its own). We did our best to capture the best covers (and by best, I mean my favorites) so we can all enjoy them now and later.

Naturally, Audrey was at the top of my favorites list. Here she is with her huz, Mel Ferrer.

Oddly, my next favorite wasn't of a model or an actress. It was of Alfred Hitchcock. Cue The Birds. Just brilliant. And who knew men were allowed on the cover of Vogue?

Next, I thought I had spotted Sienna Miller, not looking "too toothy." Alas, it was some beautiful blonde from the '60s. Style twins? Oui.

Speaking of Brits, what would a Vogue cover retrospective be without Kate Moss? She seemed to be a passerby-favorite.

A model so nice, she appeared twice.

Though the biggest repeat offender was...can you guess?

Linda Evangelista. Vogue Paris is in love with Linda. And why shouldn't they be?

A few more of my faves. Hope you enjoy the stroll down fashion memory lane. A book of covers to commemorate the event is to be published soon and will be available on Amazon.

More photos on Teen Vogue here.

Now if only Harper's Bazaar would do the same through Central Park, we could all get our Richard Avedon fix... Until then, we can enjoy a sneak peek here!

Get Your Swirl On: DailyCandy Launches Sample Sale Site

Brace yourselves. In an attempt to continue taking over the world, DailyCandy is launching Swirl, Sample Sales by DailyCandy. In less than two weeks, fashionistas will surely be swooning as the beta site launches on November 16 (perhaps Swoon would have been a more appropriate name). The official launch will be in January 2010.

To get in on the deals, which will include up to 80% off on designers that DailyCandy editors handpick, such as Lauren Merkin, Leigh & Luca, etc., you simply have to be a DailyCandy member (i.e., subscriber).

Not the first to jump on the online sample sale bandwagon (though arguably the first to present sample sale listings online), Swirl joins online sample sale site leaders like Gilt, Hautelook, Ideeli, The Outnet, RueLaLa, Editor's Closet, Beyond the Rack, Gomatta Girls and One Kings Lane, among many others.

Do you shop online sample sales? Will you be getting your Swirl on?
