RING in the New Year

Last year, I began a new tradition of quite literally ringing in the New Year (with a new ring to commemorate the occassion). Read how it all started here and see last year's picks too. This year, the tradition continues. It's a fun tradition to start with friends and loved ones. I've rounded up my faves and hope you'll find something to inspire you, whether it symbolizes where you're at now or where you hope to be this year. (I'm having a hard time picking just one!)

New Year's Eve Traditions

How will you be ringing in the New Year? We normally keep it pretty low-key, celebrating with friends or family at home with silly games, yummy bites and champagne (or milkshake) delights. For some reason, New Year's Eve always reminds me of three of my favorite movies, Arthur (don't ask!), Breakfast at Tiffany's and When Harry Met Sally. A perfect New Year's Eve for me? Cuddled up on the couch (with my Snuggie and my hubby) watching all three.
Who doesn't love getting caught between the moon and New York City and ridiculous parties with long ciggies (okay, I prefer candy ciggies)? And can you really top this: "When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." -- Harry (Billy Crystal) to Sally (Meg Ryan) on New Year's Eve in 1989's When Harry Met Sally (can you believe this movie is 20 years old!)
How do you like to ring in the New Year?
Once in a Blue Moon...River

Did you hear? We'll be ringing in the New Year with a blue moon! Though, unlike its name suggests, it won't actually be blue. Just big, bright, shiny and full (the second full moon of the month). I'll take it.
Happy New Year, dearies. May it be big, bright, shiny and full...of happiness, loveliness and everything you want.
Moon River, wider than a mile,
I'm crossing you in style some day.
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker,
wherever you're going I'm going your way.
Two drifters off to see the world.
There's such a lot of world to see.
We're after the same rainbow's end -- waiting 'round the bend,
my huckleberry friend,
Moon River and me.

Sex and the City 2 Trailer (insert schoolgirl squeals here!)
No, I didn't love the first Sex and the City movie. Yes, I will definitely see -- and be counting down the days - to the Sex and the City sequel. I can only hope it's more like the TV show this time around, but even if not, I will be seeing the third, fourth and fifth installments. I believe they call that obsessed? Forgive me for getting "Carried" away (sorry, couldn't resist!). Since this seems to be my year of travel (I am technically homeless, mind you, while traveling this thing we call the world), I especially appreciate that the girls appear to be going on a travel adventure of their own. And of course love that the trailer's set to Empire State of Mind.
Will you be watching?

Empire State of Mind
| The Colbert Report | Mon - Thurs 11:30pm / 10:30c | |||
| Alicia Keys - Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down | ||||
| ||||
Do you love the Alicia Keys song Empire State of Mind as much as I do? Doesn't it seem so perfect for New Year's? New York, dreams coming true...is there a better way to kick off a new year? Turns out there is. With a laugh, of course.
Enjoy Stephen Colbert's suburban version of Empire State of Mind. New York, dreams and laughter. Now that's a good time. Dedicated to my Greenwich, Connecticut-raised hubby...

Regretsy, I've Had a Few...Whatever!

Are you trying to keep up your holiday spirits, but sometimes find it challenging? Me too. I'm trying to be Polly Sunshine, but sometimes, sometimes, I need a little dark humor to get me through the day. On the road, I get my fix from Whatever with Alexis & Jennifer on Sirius satellite radio (Alexis being Alexis Stewart, Martha Stewart's sardonic, hysterical daughter). In front of the boob tube, I get it from Whatever, Martha! on FLN, where Alexis and Jennifer watch old Martha Show episodes and mock Martha Stewart and her guests ruthlessly (brills!).
But when I'm online, where do I get my fix? At Regretsy.
Now I'm addicted to Etsy as much as the next design-loving girl. But the problem with Etsy is that not only is there a ton of great stuff that you suddenly can't live without, there's a ton of awful stuff that you can't believe someone actually took the time to make (and sell!).

Regretsy exists to document it all, with wisecrackin' commentary to go with the "finds" (the finds range from felted vajay-jay necklaces to baby rattles with deer hooves and furry acorns, or in other words, anything that could be filed under WTF?!).
If you love Go Fug Yourself or simply enjoy a little schadenfreude, get thee to Regretsy.
Think it's just too mean? Ironically, in a twisted turn of karma, most of the featured products on Regretsy end up selling out. Plus, Regretsy is selling their own merchandise, where the profits are then used to hire Etsy artists to create handmade products for various charities (they are currently raising money to create hats for cancer and chemo patients). So, really, it's good to be bad.
Best of New York Theater: Celebrity Autobiography

If you're in New York and have a chance to see Celebrity Autobiography: In Their Own Words, run, don't walk. Celebrities like SNLers Kristen Wiig and Rachel Dratch, along with Sherri Shepherd and Ryan Reynolds (yum!) read straight out of celebrity autobiographies (like Suzanne Sommers, Burt Reynolds, Loni Anderson, Debbie Reynolds, Eddie Fisher) and it is beyond words. Because it is in their own words. In their exact words.
Learn that even Debbie Reynolds believes that her former BFF Elizabeth Taylor deserves a lover -- even if that means losing her own husband, Eddie Fisher, to the grand dame. The self-adulation is bananas, and the current celebs do a brilliant job with the comedic timing (Rachel Dratch's "eye-acting" alone deserves some kind of award).
