Kelly's Klicks: Maternity & Baby Gear Q. Great news: I'm pregnant! Bad news: I have no clue where to find stylish maternity wear or hip baby gear. Can you help me from looking like a frumpy fashion faux pas (or should I say ma')? Thanks!
A. Congrats on two accounts! First, on the lil bun in the oven, and second, on becoming pregnant in an age where stylish maternity fashion abounds. Just a few years ago it was a completely different story. But thanks to the "casualization" of fashion over the past few years, and all the new Hollywood moms, plus the fashion industry realizing there's boocoo bucks to be made, maternity wear's cup runneth over. And there's loads of new stuff for the fashion-forward baby, too. When shopping for your new wardrobe, take into account these three factors: comfort, style, and cost. Your body will be going through lots of wonderful and crazy changes -- the last thing you'll want to be bothered by are tight clothes, impractical heels, and the like. Comfort is key, but luckily that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style. There are tons of options that let you maintain your individuality and flair -- and don't forget the power of accessories. Earrings, scarves, necklaces, bags -- use what you have! Cost can be looked at two ways: 1) You'll only need maternity clothes for a few months so why spend a lot of dough? Or, 2) You'll only be pregnant a limited amount of times so why not splurge a little? I think a philosophy somewhere in between is practical, but that's up to you and your wallet.
When money's no object, we love APeaInThePod.com. Designer duds, designer prices, maternity sizes. Aaaah. The 100% silk chiffon cami for $175 and 7 for all Mankind jeans for $175 add up to one hot mama. A little too pricey? No prob, just click on the sale section.
JapaneseWeekend.com has super stylish pieces and offers free returns. Their innovative Ok™ waistbands cradle your lower belly while supporting your back -- all the while looking incredibly hip. MimiMaternity.com has adorable swimwear, like the Ciao Bella halter Tankini by La Blanca for $118.
Also worth browsing, OldNavy.com for their maternity stretch denim jackets ($26.50), and Gap.com for their cropped pants, as well as their adorable baby and kiddie clothes. We adore the crocheted hooded poncho ($49.50) for girls, and onsies for newborn boys and girls (about $10).
And for the baby who is even hipper than mama, MessyBaby.com has the ultimate sushi bib and burp cloths for $21, as well as glam-o camo diaper bags ($135) and changing pads ($40).
Take a cue from celebrity moms and remember to accentuate your new positive, instead of trying to mask it. A proud, confident woman, who feels great in her own skin, is the most beautiful woman, pregnant or not.
