Sending Flowers and Gift Baskets Q. Every time I want to send someone flowers, I have no clue where to start. Can you point me in the right direction? Also, are there any good alternatives to flowers, like gift baskets or something along those lines? And I've been wanting to send my friend in Japan flowers -- is this possible? Thanks!
Presented By Our Haute Sponsor: A. I feel your pain. You search for "flowers" on Google and keep coming up with same two or three vendors and not much variety. And you also always feel like you're paying too much for what you're getting and never are quite sure how they'll turn out. But, there's hope! Much to my surprise, hallmark.com has one of the best bang-for-your buck selections out there. For instance, you can currently order 24 multi-colored summer roses, vase included, for $39.95. The little things to watch out for when shopping for flowers online are delivery times, service charges and how the flowers are sent. Sometimes, to have a vase included, you have to pay an extra $10 for it. Otherwise your stems will come in a box, which isn't a bad thing, but often isn't the sentiment you're after, so just be sure to read each site thoroughly. And many sites will charge you an extra service charge fee, so be prepared for that quoted prices to increase a good 10-20%.
When time is of the essence, check out florist.com. Most blooms can be hand-delivered if ordered by 2:30pm in the recipient's time zone. FTD.com also offers same-day delivery on orders placed before 2pm. On all of these sites you can browse by price range, occasion and best sellers -- very handy features. Other sites to check out are proflowers.com and 1800flowers.com.
When sending stems abroad, head to flowers-international.com. To send flowers to Japan, for instance, arrangements start at $65 and are delivered next business day when ordered by 4pm EST. The great thing about this site is that the price you're given is the total price, with no additional charges at checkout. So you won’t be hit up with extra service fees, delivery charges or taxes. You can also create custom bouquets by writing what kind of arrangement you want and giving your price range.
As far as gift baskets go, one of my all-time faves is winecountrygiftbaskets.com. You can score awesome "gift towers" of Ghirardelli chocolates and other fab goodies starting at just $19.95. This site is a godsend come Christmas time. If you want to go more fruit-and-nut, as well as gourmet, try harryanddavid.com. For $39.95, you can send a classic gift tower that includes pears, cheese, caramel popcorn, deluxe nuts, cookies and candies, all packaged beautifully. One last and very helpful piece of advice. Whenever you're shopping for gifts online, or for anything online for that matter, take two seconds to type whatever the product name you're searching for is plus "coupons" into Google. For instance, if you've found an arrangement at FTD.com that you'd like to order, type in "FTD coupons." You'll come up with a list of multiple coupon code sites and 90% of the time, will save at least 10%, whether it's through a link or a coupon code. So not only will you make someone else's day, you'll make your wallet happy, too. Got questions? We've got you covered! Send them to kelly@bussbuss.com and we'll hook you up. You can also catch Kelly's Klicks each week in Pink magazine in Detroit, MI. Read Previous Columns Here:
