Kelly's Klicks: Breast Cancer Awareness 2005 Q. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, but beyond sporting pink and donating directly to charity, what more can a cause-loving fashionista do? A. Shop! The more you spend on the below fabulous products, the more you help contribute to finding a cure. Now that’s haute. And remember, Christmas is a mere two months away (scary, I know!) so keep in mind what great gifts these products will make – whether the recipient is you, a friend, or the millions of women whose lives you’ll be helping to save. Larger shops are certainly doing their part in the fight against Breast Cancer and you can score great goodies like cashmere scarves, watches, and housewares -- even a pink Roomba vacuum! -- from sites like target.com, lnt.com and nordstrom.com. But, indie designers and shops are doing their part, too. And when you buy indie, you can nearly guarantee that no one else will ever be sporting the same item or giving the same gift. Where to find fab goodies that go towards a great cause?
First head to sommerdesigns.com (a BussBuss.com Haute Shop -- just one of several donating to the cause), where they're helping to bag a cure by donating 20% of the sale price of their adorable pink and white toile Malaga Bag ($72) to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Los Angeles Affiliate.
A beauty of a site spabox.com is donating a portion of the sales from its Shop for a Cure collection to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The Hope Handmade Luxury Soap makes a wonderful gift and is one haute deal ($6.50). If you're a paper lover like me, head to 7twentyfour.com for stationery so cute it'll make you want to you ditch email for life. All proceeds from the sales of their brilliant themed notecards will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Onafriday.net creates fabulous jewelry and cards and will be donating 20% of all sales for the month of October to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as well. The Pink & Lovely earrings are gorgeous and fresh and make a foolproof gift ($50). Those who are shoe and bag obsessed will get their kicks at bagswithstyle.com, where you'll find the cutest shoe bags (makes a fab gift for traveling divas!). Bags with Style donates a portion of the proceeds of each and every sale to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
And for those special men out there (or the ladies who love them) who want to show their support, while scoring the best shave of their lives, head to getamenity.com for their Original Pink shave cream (ladies, you'll love it so much you'll want some for yourself!). Twenty-five percent of the profits from each sale will benefit Men Against Breast Cancer.
And let's not forget those very special best friends who are barking to show their support -- our pooches. Through November 30, 2005, barkandsparkle.com is donating 25% of profits from sales of their pink collars to to the Susan G. Komen Foundation when you enter the coupon code PINKMAG at checkout.
Last but certainly not least, visit uber-fun site designhergals.com, where you can create a custom gal and print up your own stationery with her on it, has formed its own Gal to Gal foundation, dedicated to financially and emotionally supporting patients diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer. A percentage of every sale on their site goes to the foundation, which provides services for cancer sufferers and their families at a time when health benefits may be cancelled - or heavily reduced, time off from work may be necessary for the primary bread winner and when the resources for hospice care may not be available. They also have the sweetest 'Got Cure?' t-shirt. Hopefully soon, there will be matching 'YES!' shorts to go along with it. Got questions? We've got you covered! Send them to kelly@bussbuss.com and we'll hook you up. You can also catch Kelly's Klicks each week in Pink magazine.
