July 30, 2003 : Venom Gloss: $15
|
Oooh, to have bee-stung lips... How's a girl to do that without...getting stung by a bee? Or without injecting collagen into her lips? Easy! Lip Venom by DuWop is what the Hollywood make-up pros use to give actresses the perfect pucker. Mila Kunis of That '70s Show is just one famoose fan of many. Apparently the ginger and cinnamon in the Venom cause blood to rush to the surface, giving you natural plumpness and redness. To achieve the look yourself, try the original Lip Venom for $15 or the new Venom Gloss, also $15, at duwop.com. Pucker up!

July 29, 2003 : Still Loving You Tee: $28
|
There's something bittersweet about Pink Spike tees. Cute, sweet images somehow made edgy and raw, not at all unlike the company's name. Perhaps it's the smart contrast in colors, like this lemon on black 'Still Loving You' tee. Or perhaps it's the girly graphics, like ponies and butterflies, set against vintage-y, near see-thru textures. Whatever it is, it works. Paired with denim, these tees can easily be dressed up with spiky heels or played down with flat flops. All tees are combed cotton (which means baby soft), earth-friendly and available at pinkspike.net.

July 27, 2003 : Project Greenlight
|
If you're not watching the HBO series Project Greenlight, all I can say is that I feel really sorry for you. But maybe you don't have HBO and so there's nothing you can really do about it. In that case, I offer you this: the Web site! First, if you don't know what Project Greenlight is, it's the screenwriting contest created by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck where they choose the best screenplay and directors from thousands of applicants and the winners get $1 million, courtesy of Miramax, to make their film. The show on HBO is a documentary that gives you an inside look at the making of the movie. Okay, maybe you knew that, maybe you didn't. But if you can't watch the show, at least you can watch the videos that the winners and losers submitted -- for free! If you want to read the top screenplays you can do that here, along with watching the videos that each screenwriter had to submit talking about themselves. I highly recommend watching the directorial submissions and their videos about themselves, too. There's really a lot of talent out there and it's nice to be able to get an insider's look at the whole process of making a film through the Hollywood system. If you think you're ready for that jelly, maybe you should enter next year's contest?

July 24, 2003 : CHICAGO STYLE
|
So just because we've relocated to Detroit doesn't mean we're actually living there. No, rather we've been in Chicago for "business reasons." And may I just say this is one awesome city, as far as I can tell. Like NYC, but cleaner, less crowded and with the friendliness one expects of the Midwest (for the most part). We've been lucky enough that we've stayed at the W and the Westin both times. The Westin is perfectly located (cue Oprah) in the heart of Chicago's Magnificent Mile (a.k.a. Michigan Avenue). That means downtown Chi-town, where the rich people live. High rises, designer shops, basically your Fifth Avenue or Rodeo Drive of the Midwest. I recommend the Westin because you can roll around in their "Heavenly Beds" (layers of white down and soft, yet crisp, white sheets). The atmosphere is stylish and classic.
The W, on the other hand, is located on North Lake Shore, directly across from Navy Pier, which is on one of those "Great Lakes" (I'm guessing Lake Michigan, but does it mater? It's all water, no?). Navy Pier is a tourist mecca, likened to the Santa Monica Pier, where you have your Ferris wheel and other carnie rides alongside family-friendly restaurants. You can take boat tours from the Pier and it's actually clean and nicely done -- if you're into that. The W's bar, lounge and restaurant are sleek and trendy, as are all W hotels, but the rooms try too hard, resulting in a tacky tiki-meets-wannabe-mod feeling. A huge plus though, is that from the W's top-floor bar, you can view the Navy Pier fireworks Wed-Sat nights at 9:30 p.m. I've never seen prettier fireworks, and the ambient electronic music from the W bar definitely helps.
Now on to what really counts: shopping. Michigan Avenue is nice, don't get me wrong. I found several great deals at the five-story Bloomingdale's located in the 900 N. Michigan Shops and have a new favorite label: Aqua. With about 70 shops ranging from Bebe and Club Monaco to Gucci and Maxmara, you won't be bored. The 900 N. Michigan Shops are also directly across the street from the aforementioned Westin. Up and down the Mag Mile, you'll also find Tiffany's, Saks, Ralph Lauren, Nordstrom, Sephora and more.
But if you have a hankering for local boutiques, Lincoln Park's Armitage Avenue is where you should be. Lincoln Park has a wonderful neighborhoody feel, reminding me of NYC's Upper West Side. Highlights include Art Effect, which features many local artists' wares, and Soapstone, a yummy bath shop where I scored a fun orange, red and fuschia Alan Stuart make-up bag for just $10. I also snagged a new lip gloss by lil-known brand (but not for long) Wallet.
If you find yourself famished from all of your shopping, head to nearby Mia Francesca on Clark Street. Truly some of the best pasta you'll ever have (I recommend the pasta with asparagus and lemon cream sauce -- deelish!) And a smidge of bread pudding never hurt anyone. If you wanna have the best chocolate cake of your life, head to Bice on Ontario Street, just a few blocks from the W. Flourless molten chocolate cake with strawberries and a scoop of vanilla ice cream will make your whole trip to Chi-town worth it. By this point, you'll probably be out of spending money, but not to fret. The 35-acre Lincoln Park Zoo is free! Lots of animals, beautiful grounds and a great place to show off your new duds.
Chicago has a lot to offer, and I haven't even had deep dish yet. I'll be back on September 20th though for the Renegade Craft Fair in Wicker Park. Come support BussBuss and your local artists as we share our homemade wares with the world (err, I mean Chicago).

This just might be my favorite tee in the whole wide world. "Gold digger: Like a hooker…just smarter." Doesn't that just say it all? As in you have a wicked sense of humor – and fashion. This badass David & Goliath tee is made from soft cotton, is fitted and waist length. You can get it and many snarky tees like it, such as "Sugar Daddy Supper Club: Where the Wealthy and Gold Diggers Socialize," at none other than LA-based (who would've guessed) Pin Up Girl Clothing.

July 14, 2003 : The Buss Is Back!
|
The DailyBuss has been on a temporary hiatus due to the crazy fact that we've moved from sunny Austin, Texas to sunny Detroit, Michigan. Rock City, Motown, home of Eminem, Francis Ford Coppola, Madonna, Kid Rock, the White Stripes and more.
Despite Detroit's horrible reputation as being ghetto unfabulous, I've found it to be quite Gilmore Girls-ish in our little 'hood of Birmingham. And that's a good thing. Really. So in the spirit of giving this place a chance, here are some extremely important Detroit facts.
Detroit:
*Was the first city in the nation to assign individual telephone numbers. (I love the phone!)
*Has more theater seats than any other city east of the Mississippi River outside of NYC. (I lurve NYC!)
*Is the potato chip capital of the world. (Who doesn't love the salty goodness of chips?)
*Is north of Canada. (What's that all aboot?!)
*Makes lots of cars. (I drive cars!)
*And most importantly, is home to the nation's first shopping mall, which opened in 1954. (I lurve shopping!)
If you'd like to get all Detroity, there are many ways you can show your Motown pride. You could check out Em's latest CD, wash down those chips with some Vernors ginger ale (uniquely Detroit), host a Godfather marathon (think Francis Ford Coppola), watch Desperately Seeking Susan (props to Madge) or you could go buy a car!
As you can see, there's much more to Motown than what you saw in 8 Mile and I look forward to exploring and sharing those little gems I come across along the way with you, my Busstas. A huge thanks for your patience and you can now look forward to your regularly scheduled DailyBuss programming.
