March 28, 2006 : Salute Style
|
Many, many bags come across our desks here at the big double Buss, and after awhile a girl tires of seeing the same ol' thing. Trendy becomes predictable when everyone sports the same bag, which is why we were so super psyched when we saw the new line of military-inspired bags at Cahoots. Back in our infancy, we interviewed Cahoots designer and artist Paige Davidson (you can read the interview here) and it's exciting to see how far she's come, while staying true to her roots. All Cahoots bags are made with vintage fabrics and are one-of-a-kind or very limited edition, and we're especially digging these clutches and handbags fashioned from old military uniforms. Investigate the whole line and scoop up your fave fast (they are one of a kind, after all) at Cahoots Handbags.

March 27, 2006 : Bless You
|
Seems like everyone is aahchooing all over the streets of Manhattan. Thanks, Mother Nature. How to keep stylish when you must have a stock of tissues at the ready? With a clever tissue holder, of course. For sneezing-on-the-go, a sparkly Whiting and Davis tissue holder is the most glam friend you can have. Pick one up in pink or silver at celebrity-fave shop Kitson. For sneezing at home, Lotta Jansdotter tissue box covers are a must. Score one in the pattern and color of your choice (organic or geometric) at Greener Grass Design. And to relieve your allergies altogether, score some drugs (the legal kind) at drugstore.com. While you're at it, you might as well start browsing the concealers in the beauty section since that red nose of yours isn't quite the trend you were hoping to set this spring. Gesundheit.

March 24, 2006 : Kiss Your Rear
|
BussBuss HQ is in the midst of making over our workspace and we've just found the most adorable must-have chair. Since BussBuss means 'KissKiss' in German, we're going to have to get two, one in red and one in hot pink. If you'd like to have your tooshie kissed in style, score a mod smooch chair of your own at Perpetual Kid (26"W. x 27"H).

March 22, 2006 : Great Design for Good
|
In a not-yet-very-fruitful search for office chairs that look stylish, are comfy and don't cost more than $300, we came across this cool chair (not for sale) on treehugger that was fashioned out of an old Audi car seat. Which lead us to Greenloop, a company who aligns style and sustainability, aesthetics and ethics, resulting in super cool clothing and accessories. Which got us to thinking about other designers who go green and who use vintage and found materials to make cool new things, like Lekkner, Sew Pretty and Pamela Barsky. Which reminded us that we never posted this super helpful article about socially conscious designers – big oops on our part. Better late than never! Check it out, and if you have any great ideas or suggestions on that topic (perhaps a fab DIY project to share?) then email us at editor@bussbuss.com or post on our Haute Talk message boards (we're trying to clear all of the spam away – scout's honor). By the way, the only chair we've come up with so far is this one, so please pass along any tips you have (we've been given the following reqs: no arms, preferably ergonomic, under $300, not ugly)!

March 21, 2006 : Hang Ups
|
Silly BussBuss didn't even realize that yesterday was the first official day of spring. Perhaps that's because it was 30 degrees out. Bitter? Us? Never. Since we constantly get emails asking for cool ways to spruce up spaces, we thought we'd share one of our new fave spots for housewares and home decor: Rare Device. You may recall owner Rena Tom from her gorgeous jewelry line that's a hit with New York and San Fran hipsters alike? Well, she recently opened up the coolest little shop in Brooklyn called Rare Device to share her great finds from other cool designers across the globe. You used to have to live in New York to enjoy the lovelies, but now she's filling people's desires for cool home and fashion goodies with her online shop raredevice.net. Which is where we scored ourselves some Serious Gnomes. We have an apple, but think the flower wall hangings are so perf for spring. You can't tell so much in the photos, but each Serious Gnome is ultra glossy and slightly glittery, making for a deliciously different piece of art. Pick up one or a whole bouquet (if flowers aren't for you, scope out the skulls, stars, clovers, gems and apples too) at Rare Device.

March 20, 2006 : Bootylicious
|
In the transition from winter to spring, what are a girl's footsies supposed to do when she wants to rawk heels? Here's one clever gal's solution: pom pom booties. Perhaps the younger, hipper version of legwarmers, these 100% wool mohair booties fit snuggly over shoes and tie at the ankles for a look that is surely distinct -- very Alice in Wonderland meets rock princess in our opinion. March to the beat of your own style drummer, while keeping your feet cozy, in a pair of Laddhavan Sutana pom pom booties at Stars and Infinite Darkness (formerly Virgin Threads).

March 17, 2006 : Lucky Charms
|
We're gonna pass on the green beer and pinching rituals this St. Patty's Day and instead focus on something much more rewarding than embarrassing memories: delicious jewelry. Buying a piece of green-inspired jewelry is a new tradition for us and one we think everyone should adopt too (okay, maybe not everyone, but anyone who gives a pinch about their style anyway). In our latest search for the perfect piece, we couldn't stop drooling over the gems at Heidi J. Hale. The mouth-watering photography alone is worth a trip to the online shop, but we're really drawn to the simple elegance of it all. Pieces are modern without being trendy -- special, yet can be worn everyday. Right now, we're trying to decide between the jade necklace ($32), the apple green-dyed turquoise earrings ($36) or the gaspeite ring ($20). With prices so incredibly reasonable, we just might scoop up all three of these lucky charms. Scout out your faves and start a tradition of your own at heidijhale.com.

March 16, 2006 : Six Easy Steps to Getting a Great Glow Job
|
While we're getting all prepped for spring with new wardrobe staples, let us all not forget about the thing that really makes a difference in our appearance – our skin. Winter is oh so mean to our hands, footsies and face, so it's time for some spring sprucing in the beauty department. Here's what we're going to do to try to get our glow back:
1. Soak our winter-weary bones in a haute bath. And we're trading in our rubber ducky and champagne for something that will really help us, Chocolate Lover's Tub Truffles from Sweet Melissa ($10.50). Packed with cocoa butter, powdered coconut milk, oatmeal flour and more, these sweet treats will be our calorie-free salvation to softer skin.
2. After a long soak, which may or may not include some real bon-bon eating, we'll muster up the energy for a shower. Why? To get our scrub on, of course. Nothing gives a girl a glow better than exfoliating cream. We're treating ourselves to Bella Lucce Pomegranate Polishing Crème at Spabox ($16). Tiny microderm abrasion crystals, like those ones used at fancy schmancy spas for facials, slough away dead cells, resulting in smoother, softer, glowing skin. Watch out J.Lo!
3. Next, we'll let our special someone give our hands and feet a much-needed massage with some Extreme Creme at Flower Peddler ($10.95). Made for extremely dry skin, the buttery concoction of shea, cocoa, aloe vera, vitamin E and more whips dry skin into supple shape in no time. Which is necessary, considering time is something we don't have much of these days.
4. After a few hours of catching up on some much-needed TiVo and letting those bon bons digest (we may have had one too many, okay), we'll finally face the fact that our sunlight-starved skin looks nothing like Nicole Kidman's pale glow. Thank goodness for TanTowels at Essenceology ($20). Each disposable towelette exfoliates and tans, without the streaky elbows and knees thank you very much, so we can look St. Barts without leaving our St. Home.
5. After our nightly milkshake, we'll finally call it a day. Being beautilicious is such hard work, so we do need our beauty rest, you know. But in the morning, we'll wake up with more glowing skin that's a smidge sun-kissed and a lot softer. And because we're perfectionists, we'll not leave our St.Home without sweeping on a little Mineral Glow Illuminating Powder from J. Lynne Cosmetics ($12). Giving us that final boost of airbrushed beauty, these powders are perf for our cheeks, our eyes and our décolleté. Reoow!
6. And finally, we'll focus on our lips, dahling, since they are our namesake after all (you do know that BussBuss means 'Kiss Kiss' right?). Plumping our pucker? Pucker Up Lip Tints at Raw Beauty ($5.25). Spiked with peach flavoring, these babies are made to keep lips tasty, soft and shimmery. Take that Angelina.

March 15, 2006 : Home Slice
|
As spring starts to blow in (thank you, lawd!), we'll all hopefully start emerging from hibernation for some social gatherings. BussBuss, for one, is having a milkshake and french fry night this very Thursday, and we're sure many of you have dinner parties, afternoon teas, cocktail soirées and BBQs penciled in on your calendars to usher in the new season. And whether you're the hostess or the guest, we think you'll dig some of the new home items at Fred Flare – we're in lurve as usual. For instance, you can spruce up your digs or your host's with this adorable daisy grass mat ($24) or add some beary sweet style to the tabletop with these salt and pepper shakers. Or make like the cutest hostess on the block with an embroidered teacup apron – the teacups are also pockets! Get too cute for your own good at Fred Flare, and score free ground shipping too on orders over $20 when you use code "spruceup.0306" at checkout (expires 3/19/06; not valid on sale merch).

March 14, 2006 : Take Cover
|
If you need a cool way to protect your laptop (and up its style ante) beyond Schtickers and Skyns, and don't want something basic that everybody else has, then these Sukie covers are for you. Sukie UK, famous for those adorable travel journals, have graced the world of laptop sleeves with their hip and cool illustrations, turning something as techie as your laptop into a piece of art (in our very correct opinion anyway). We're partial to the Motel sleeve, but would be happy dressing our laptops in any of these designs at GYMS Pacific ($40+).

March 08, 2006 : Three Way
|
We're huge fans of pieces that are versatile and apparently Mischa Barton is, too. This cool Taka babydoll top, which she was recently seen sporting on her vacay to Hawaii, can be rocked as a top, as a skirt, or as a mini-dress. We think it's perfect over a swimsuit and dig the colorful print. And since it's one-size, it also makes a killer no-brainer gift for that fashionista friend of yours. Adopt a Taka babydoll top of your own for $79 at Shop Robertson.

March 07, 2006 : Baby Mama
|
Since BussBuss is going to be an aunt very soon and is best buds with someone about to have not one, but two babies, we've recently started thinking a lot about baby stuff. To be honest, we were kind of bored by the whole idea before – until those nearest and dearest to us started cooking buns in their own ovens that is. Don't get us wrong, there is a ton of yawn-inducing baby and maternity gear out there, so we set out to find stuff for lil ones, and the haute mamas who are giving them life, that would be worthy of haute status. If you know someone with a haute baby on the way, or are a haute mama yourself, check out our Baby Love roundup on Haute Shops, where you'll find darling finds like this Chick baby bib at Simply Sarah Shaw, this One Little Monkey baby blanket, this NakedPaint Belly Butter at Essenceology and this cool baby bag at Calliope Boutique. Plus, score exclusive discount codes too. Click here to see all the Haute Baby stuff now!

March 03, 2006 : Ice Ice Baby
|
If you're stuck in an apartment you love with a fridge that you hate, due to its non-existent automatic icemaker, then you know how difficult it can be to get good ice. It seems simple enough, but those whack plastic trays only give splintered cubes, half never wanting to come out. Luckily, the wonder that is silicone is taking a break from tata-enhancement to benefit the ice-frustrated everywhere. As great for freezing as it is for baking (and boosting), silicone ice cube trays rock. No cracking or splintered ice, the babies pop right out of the flexible non-stick trays, giving you bigger and better hunks of ice that seem to last longer too. And, if you're lucky enough to have a dishwasher, silicone ice cube trays are dishwasher safe too. Plus, they come in fun colors like bright orange, lime green and the more tradish cool blue. Pick some up for $4.95 each at Crate and Barrel here (trust us, they're worth it ten times over).

March 01, 2006 : Write On
|
We're back from our honeymoon and, thanks to New York's unforgiving temps, freezing our freshly tanned tooshies off – but happily so! We had a comedy-of-errors wedding and honeymoon that all ended up being amazing and fabulous in the end (at least we think so!) and plan to share all the deets shortly, so stay tuned. To keep the details as fresh as possible, we kept a wedding journal and a honeymoon journal (the old-fashioned paper kind since we banned laptops from the vacay of course), and are loving the now-retro act of journaling. We think everyone should get all 'Dear Diary' and remember to dream big, travel often and reflect, in style of course, so have rounded up what we think are some of the cutest journals. Topping our list?
Pamela Barsky's quirky journals that never fail to make us giggle
Working Class Studio's vibrant print journals and sketchbooks at SCAD
See Jane Work's fab roundup of fabric, felt and destination journals by Kate Spade, Jonathan Adler, etc.
Recycled book journals by Ex Libris Anonymous, sweet illustrated journals by If'n Books and more at Elsewares
Jill Bliss' botanical journal and Good on Paper's little idea books at Fred Flare
Got some faves of your own? Tell us all about it on our Haute Talk forums!
