Pretty Fabulous: Melissa Joy Manning

Do love jewelry as much as we do, but aren't exactly a fan of in-your-face glamazon bling?

Then you'll likely love Melissa Joy Manning's treasures as much as we do.

The California designer seductively melds the modern with the traditional, the rough with the pretty, the unexpected with the organic.

And if you happen to be a bride-to-be and are dreaming of a truly one-of-a-kind engagement ring, prepare to swoon (and remember, as Carrie Bradshaw proved in SATC, you can totally marry yourself to justify your acquisition).

While there are some beautiful necklaces and bracelets and we already have the engagement ring of our dreams, we're fawning like Bambi over the unusually spectacular stud earrings and standout cocktail rings.

Are you up for some new treasures?

Then, take a peek!

Flower Girl: Twist Style Rings

How does your garden grow?

Well, since we live in a city flat with no yard, it doesn't grow so much.

But that won't keep us from getting our flower fix.

Instead of mulch and mayhem, we're opting for a vintage-style flower ring from Twist Style.

Like a corsage for your finger, we think they'd make a sweet birthday gift for your BFF, a fab bridesmaid gift or simply a happy treat to yourself for being so fabulous.

And, because they're a bargain at under $30 each, you can easily collect multiples for a whole bouquet of vintage-style loveliness.

The best part? They'll never wilt.

Half Off Kristen McCloud Jewelry -- Hooray!

When our favorite earring designer told us her signature collection was marked down to half off, we nearly fell off our Chie Miharas.

Gorgeously wrapped and draped, Kristen McCloud earrings are meticulously detailed, but look effortlessly fabulous dangling from your lobes.

They also dress up any outfit in an instant.

And now you can get them, along with her signature necklaces and bracelets, for half off, but only while supplies last.

Give It Tutu Me

Please pardon our last-minute publishing vacay the past few weeks. BussBuss was in New York scoping out new designers to bring your way. Look out for these new finds in upcoming DailyBuss installments. And now, on with today's fabulous find...

Love the whole ballerina look, but not up for donning a tutu, twinkle toes?

Ditto.

Which is why we're loving New Orleans-based jewelry designer dejarnette's latest ballet collection.

Elegantly avant-garde, we love the mix of antique and vintage found materials with gray organza and soft pink pleated chiffon ruffles.

And since we didn't get to attend the ABT Opening Night Gala last week (we opted for Avenue Q instead -- and highly recommend it if you like to laugh non-stop), this will let us get our ballet fix for a bit.

Take a peek!

P.S. In celebration of their second birthday, now through May 31, 2008, buy two pieces of jewelry and get a third piece of jewelry of equal or lesser value for free!

Shop We Love: b*fly by Bluefly

Our friends over at Bluefly, purveyor of designer looks for less, just sent word that they launched b*fly, a new online boutique that links haute couture with casual wear.

In their own words: "b*fly breaks free of the shopping norms by enabling modern fashionistas to shop by trend and to mix and match b*fly's new contemporary casuals with their favorite couture pieces from Bluefly.com."

In other words, they realize people with great personal style don't dress head-to-toe in one designer and it's all about the mix (hello Kate Moss) and wanted to add much more hip, up-and-coming designers to their current roster of more established designers.

The best part? Like at Bluefly, the items on b*fly are up to 40% off.

Is there a chic way to say woohoo?

We're loving that bags by Rebecca Minkoff, Bulga, Goldenbleu, Alexis Hudson, Kooba and Kale are now much more affordable and that we can essentially find all the brands we love from sites like Shopbop and Pink Mascara always on sale (apparel by J Brand, Hudson, Twelfth Street By Cynthia Vincent, jewelry by Lee Angel, CC Skye, Rachel Leigh, shoes by Marc by Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Frye).

Pretty fly.

Check it out!

Do You DaWanda? Shop the Etsy of Europe!

Ever wonder what designers across the pond are up to? Not the big names you can get in every major city, but the independent designers you'd find on sites like Etsy here in the States?

Wonder no more.

DaWanda, the Etsy of Europe, will let you get your fix.

And even though exchange rates aren't exactly in our favor these days, you can still score great deals.

For instance, this darling teapot necklace made from polymer clay would make such a sweet birthday or Mother's Day gift and costs just $6 EUR plus $2 EUR to ship via USPS Priority Mail (if math hurts your head -- and we feel your pain, that means you'll pay about $12 and get your goodies from Sofia, the designer in Bulgaria, in 7-10 days).

It's like having a jet-setting BFF send you goodies from afar, a style pen-pal of sorts -- but better because you get to pick them out yourself.

Way more affordable than booking a ticket to Europe, stroll the virtual market and impress your friends with one-of-a-kind gifts, art and fashion.

Take a trip to DaWanda!

Shop We Love: Pop Your Collar at Gargyle

If you enjoy sipping martinis in the parlor, poppin' collars, crests, tennis, argyle socks and the general country club lifestyle, then click your croquet-loving self on over to Gargyle, stat.

Born out of a love for early country club lifestyle, Gargyle aims to revive and modernize its spirit.

Think less Ralph Lauren and more Built by Wendy: younger, edgier, but still aspirational and supremely well-edited.

We're loving Valentine dresses, Samantha Pleet rompers, Giles & Brother jewelry, Lorick frocks (by the designer who ghost-designed Blair Waldorf's mom's collection on Gossip Girl -- that's a mouthful), United Bamboo and Rachel Comey shoes and Karen Walker sunnies.

There are lots of finds marked down hundreds of dollars, fitting our very non-country club budget.

Filled not only with their signature bedding, towels and robes, but also with hip design-focused goods that cater to the clientele they attract, we love that we can shop their well-edited picks without going on vacay by simply clicking over to their website.

What did we find? Jonathan Adler vases, Mimobot flash drives, Philippe Starck Louis Ghost Chairs, Rachel Leigh earrings, CC Skye cuffs, Comme des Garcon wallets and more.

Plus, there are two big deals happening right now.

One, a huge up to 80% off warehouse sale. We spotted Hand Maid by Michelle Frantz bags (originally $165, now $39.99) and CC Skye buckle cuffs (originally $168, now $62.99).

Arm Candy With an Edge

Last spring, on a shizniz (shopping + bizniz) trip to New York (luckily for us, they literally are one in the same), we popped into the West Village boutique Castor & Pollux.

La-love.

Between oohing and aahing over avant garde designer clothing and chatting with shop owner Kerrilynn Pamer, we spotted some fabulous resin-encased barbed wire bracelets.

We didn't buy them, which was a big mistake, as we've thought of them nearly every day since.

So, we were thrilled to discover that Castor & Pollux now has an online shop.

Sadly though, the bracelets are not on it. The ups! The downs! Now we know how Britney feels. (Though the site is still not fully launched, you should definitely check it out).

But we digress.

With some very fortuitous online sleuthing, we found the statement piece bracelets at one of our favorite haute shops.

Ring in the Season

We love our diamonds as much as the next girl, but lately we've been craving statement rings. From glammy to preppy, we want these beauties taking up residence in our jewelry box.

We're especially loving Yarborough Jewelry's horse head button ring (less Godfather, more polo in the Hamptons) and the small metal crest button ring (preppy is so irresistible this fall).

Giles & Brother had us at hello with their nail head ring in purple (who doesn't love a big stud?).

Finally, we're also up for testing our animal instincts with Kenneth Jay Lane's ladybug ring and upping our glam quotient with his dome ring (plus, it's on sale).

Sweet Petaline

When it comes to home decor and fashion, we think it's best when your accessories are as unique as possible. They're those statement pieces that really show who you are and your personal style. Are you really a mass-produced poster kind of girl? We didn't think so.

Which is why we're loving the new boutique Petaline. Selling a well-curated selection of handmade, one-of-a-kind home accessories, art, photography, jewelry, bags and clothing from Pacific Northwest artists, Petaline is a rare jewel -- a spot to find things that are actually made with heart.

Can we be expected to resist pillows by Kristin Loffer Theiss? She freehand draws each one with her sewing machine, like an etch-a-sketch (re: sew amazing).

Or Kate Endle's original collages (so sweet and so affordable).

And, of course, we believe you should look as good as your home, which is why we're loving the gorgeous bags by Jamie Irene and Sabrina Love Handbags, as well as Suzabelle's statement trench coat and Keri D'Angelo's earrings.

Haute Shop of the Week: Kim&Maki

The beauty of fashion and online shopping is that there's always something new to discover. But sometimes a girl feels like she's seen it all. Especially when it comes to jewelry.

Which is why we were happily, and admittedly surprisingly, wowed by the newest and coolest jewelry boutique on the block, Kim&Maki.

Carrying lots of up-and-coming jewelry designers from Paris to Tokyo to New York and everywhere in between, it's a new eye-candyland and we're ready to play.

We especially love the tough-luxe vibe of Orner and also fell for Marjorie Victor's organic and artistic pieces, as well as the vintage-inspired jewelry by Medecine Douce and the crafty-cool of Mur.

Presenting the New Laurel Denise

We love makeovers and we love Laurel Denise, so it's only fitting that we're extra excited about the new look, blog and designs at Laurel Denise.

Queen of exquisitely pretty and cool hand-written and hand-drawn personalized jewelry (that also happens to be wildly affordable), Laurel has added earrings and new necklace shapes and designs to her mix, as well as a brand new line of stationery the whole paper and gift community is abuzz over (or at least they're about to be).

It just makes sense to be able to get her lovely drawings in paper form: think birthday, greeting and notecards, journals, and soon, a calendar.

As Laurel says, "All pieces are inspired by vintage papers (or "found" papers)...old financial ledgers (hence, the graph paper) old library cataloging cards...just about anything that I feel has a story behind it."

Shop the latest and create a story of your own here at Laurel Denise.

P.S. Laurel Denise loves BussBuss too and is offering an exclusive 15% off with code BUSSFRIEND through August 31, 2007.

Haute Shop of the Week: Modishoppe

In celebration of independent design and the success of her indie shopping blog Modish, Jen Coray opened the virtual doors to Modishoppe in April 2007.

Since, she's been featuring a coolly edited collection of handmade goods that span from handbags, hoodies and jewelry to paper, home and gifts. It's like shopping Etsy but with a really in-the-know friend (i.e. her keen eye for hip handcrafted treasures does the digging for you).

We're especially fond of the animal-laden accessories, such as the birdie keychains by Kwoozy and the elephant wristlets by Blissful. But we're not all about fauna, we need our flora fix too. Enter Brooke Medlin's rose-shaped earrings.

Both the beauty and the curse of Modishoppe is that Coray only carries a few (sometimes only one) of each item, so if you see something you love, scoop it up fast before it's gone forever. The upside? No fear of ever having the same thing as anyone else and a constantly changing collection.

Scope out all the current treasures here at Modishoppe.

P.S. Modishoppe loves BussBuss too and is offering 10% off with code bussmod at checkout exclusively to our readers!

Haute Shop of the Week: Cut + Paste

As one of the first independent online shops on the block, Jenny Kwok's Cut + Paste has been helping pave the way for emerging designers and crafters since 2002 with its well-curated collection of handmade clothing, jewelry, accessories, paper products and more.

And it's only gotten better over the years, serving up gigantic doses of hipness and featuring over 300 designers along the way. The best part is knowing you'll never be wearing the same thing (or giving the same gift) as someone else when you shop at Cut + Paste.

If absolutely forced to pick favorites (it's like choosing your fave offspring), we'd point to Erica Weiner's cicada earrings, smil's love doll brooch, Desira Pesta's diamond print tunic, and pinecone & chickadee's cards.

But we suggest you set aside a few minutes (okay, hours... okay, days) to drool over all the Partners in Craft and find your own faves right here at Cut + Paste.

Haute Shop of the Week: Etsy

{Dying to see the Haute Shop of the Week? Let's get it on, style lover!}

We must confess, BussBuss has quite the addictive personality (very La Lohan of us, we know). In fact, we've considered checking into rehab on more than one occasion for our addiction to milkshakes, vintage dresses and cupcakes, to confess a few.

But our latest obsession these days has been over the indie goodness that is Etsy. In case you've been shopping under a rock for the past year or two, Etsy is the spot to find handmade clothing, accessories, home goodies and gifts direct from the artists, crafters and designers themselves (from all over the world).

Think of it as a hipster Ebay, minus the stress of bidding. The best part? Everything is surprisingly affordable (no retail markup rocks!) and you can bookmark your favorite sellers and then browse by who their fave sellers are too. It's never-ending indie awesomeness.

Discover your faves, and prepare to join us in rehab, here at Etsy.

Charming Sam Blossoms

We were really falling hard for Louis Vuitton's cotton ribbon necklace when we spotted it in Elle Accessories magazine -- that is until we nearly choked on the $850 price tag (hello, there are no diamonds). Then we remembered a similar necklace that caused heart palps from our Spring Bling Jewelry Guide. In fact, we liked it even more (especially the price and that it was made by an up-and-coming designer).

California-based jewelry designer Amy Steinberg of Charming Sam creates sweetly gorgeous vintage fabric beaded necklaces that add that special pop to your babydoll dresses or simple tanks. They're like grown-up candy necklaces, which we'll never be able to resist.

The Charming Sam jewelry boutique also features pretty turquoise earrings (turquoise is making a big comeback thanks in part to Cameron Diaz), lovely bracelets and even jewels for little girls -- because a girl should begin her appreciation for beautiful things from an early age, after all.

Find your fave sweet pieces right here at Charming Sam.

We're still loving the layered look when it comes to necklaces so today's Louisiana-based designer spotlight on Jeanne Nicole couldn't be more apropos. There's a certain drapey decadence to her jewels – these are the types of pieces you'd wear while sipping martinis in the parlor.

dejarnette new orleans

Continuing on our quest to highlight Louisiana-based designers, we're thrilled to feature dejarnette new orleans by Katherine Dejarnette Babin, who has become one of our favorite independent jewelry designers over the last year. We especially love the Objet Trouve (found object) collection, featuring uncommonly cool and romantic necklaces from vintage finds. Along with the Carnival piece, a heavy, pewter vintage Mardi Gras doubloon dating back to 1967, we really heart the numbered necklaces as well as the Special Delivery envelope locket.

Be sure to scope out the Elegant collection as well, where you'll find a remix of vintage finds and modern day materials like wrought iron earrings and necklaces. Fall for Space Mermaid

We see a lot of work by up-and-coming jewelry designers -- far more than any other genre in fact -- so it takes something special to stand out and catch our style-hungry eyes. As you can probably guess from their name, Space Mermaid is something special. Equal parts quirky, whimsical, girly and cool, we really love this LA-based line of handcrafted jewelry. Inspired by the sky and the sea, creatures real and imagined, we're totally smitten with the vintage-inspired collection.

Particular faves include the Golden Leaves earrings and the necklaces featuring owls and seahorses. Find something special for you (and maybe that special friend, too) right here at Space Mermaid.

Special for BussBuss readers: Enter 'bussbuss20' in the message section upon checkout and save 20% on all necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Your discount will be refunded when your order ships. Expires 11/10/06.

Unlock My Heart

We loved the whole key necklace trend, but lurve this keyhole necklace even more. It's much more unexpected, feminine yet edgy. Combining a brass keyhole with a faceted rose quartz, which is said to be a powerful element that not only attracts love and affection, but is also considered a powerful healing force, we love how the Hope necklace drapes artfully from its 18" 14k gold-fill chain.

Throughout the month of October, 50% of the proceeds of the Hope necklace will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Shop Juniper Designer right here and treat someone you love to this beautiful and sentimental treasure.

Go For Baroque

Get in on the baroque trend without going broke yourself. This gorgeous Beloved by Sophie necklace has an irresistible vintage/found-treasure vibe -- like something you'd find in your grandma's jewelry box. We love the 2-inch jet crystal (though rose and topaz crystals are also available) and envision wearing this all autumn long.

Add an element of dark sophistication to your getup, and see all of the other Beloved by Sophie treasures, right here at The Succulent Wife.

Lady Leisure + The BussBuss Blog

Fall fashions may have hit the stores, but in these dog days of summer, we're still screaming for ice cream. Lady Leisure's "I Heart Ice Cream" popsicle and fudgesicle necklaces are not only super cute, but they remind us of the bygone days of ice cream trucks and back-to-school shopping sprees. And we're all about anything young at heart. We also happen to dig the way these necklaces tie around the neck. Check out Parsons grad Helen Chi's designs right here at Lady Leisure.

p.s. For those of us who have been with BussBuss from the beginning, you might remember Kelly's blog (um, she IS BussBuss). Well we're bringing it back! Why? Because we find so many great things during the day that we want to share, from celebrity gossip and news to samples sales and events, coupon codes and fab stuff that there's just not room for in our DailyBuss sked – not to mention the fact that we want to share our obsession with Project Runway!

So check in all day long for up-to-the-minute scoop – soon we'll open up comments too so you can post (but in the meantime, totally use our Haute Talk message boards!). Plus, Fashion Week starts TOMORROW and we wanted a place to share the experience. If you want a virgin attendee's POV and you'd like to see what we're wearing and how to mix the indie with the spendy and the cheapie in real life, then stop on by the BussBuss Blog!

It's a Small World

They say it's the little things in life that mean the most, and after peeping Small Things Designs, we're in full agreement. Jewelry designer Teresa Robinson creates each stunning piece by hand in her Portland studio, where she's inspired by flora, fauna and modernism. We love the aesthetics and that each piece is one of a kind due to its handcrafted nature. The only problem? We can't choose which piece we love more.

Topping our lust list? The flora vs. fauna circle necklaces, especially the bee, as well as the uniquely cool rings, particularly the daffodil, bell and deco poppy. Birdies, skulls, crosses and stars are also available, and with such reasonable prices, we just might not have to choose just one. Find your faves right here at Small Things Designs.

Hangin' Tough

The best way to add edgy coolness to an otherwise girly getup? With tough and tongue-in-cheek accessories. The best spot to do that? At Poison Apple. New York City designer Jonelle Maira expertly combines what's trendy in fashion (skulls, chains and anchors to name a few) without the pieces seeming trendy in the least (i.e. there's no ticking timebomb on how long you can wear her pieces). They simply seem innately cool, fresh and surprisingly elegant – and unbelievably affordable.

While we never really got in on the whole skull hoopla, we can't help but crave her lolita skulls 'n' roses earrings. And the pearl conglomerate necklace evokes the same tough elegance as the Chanel necklace Keira Knightley rawked on August's Elle cover (that we loved!), except it won't cost us one month's rent. Thank goodness. Check out the entire line here at Poison Apple.

That's Dynomighty

We heart innovation at BussBuss, as if that's a shocker. So a few weeks ago when we wandered into The Market NYC, an independent designer market in our nabe, we were so happily surprised to meet the men behind Dynomighty Design. Dynomighty is an incredible line of magnetic jewelry. You can literally take the permanent magnets and shape them into necklaces or bracelets in whatever style you desire. It's like couture jewelry and it's amazing (check out the rings too!). Dynomighty also makes ingenious tyvek wallets. Constructed from a single piece of tyvek folded in a simple pattern (the same thing those express mail envelopes are made of so you can't rip or tear them and they're waterproof), there are no seams or stitching, further strengthening the wallet and allowing it to expand as it is filled. We love the red, white and blue ParAvion trifold. Check out all the innovation here at Dynomighty.

The Coral of the Story

Last year coral hit the big time, not only in fashion, but in home accessories too. But the only choice seemed to be red coral, which is beautiful, but soon became ubiquitous. Luckily, this year, there are some more creative choices. For example, you can mix it up by donning a new hue. We're obsessed with the dyed yellow coral necklace on sterling silver chain at Bonnin Designs. Bright and flirty, it's a piece that can take a tank and jeans from so-so to so haute. If yellow's not your thing, check out the mint green, salmon or more tradish antique red. Pick your pretty poison at Bonnin Designs, plus receive an exclusive 20% off when you use code BUSS20 at checkout -- and score free shipping too. If you're more about the absence of color, you'll love the white coral trio necklace at Rena Tom. Three lovely white coral branches, some with a hint of pink, are mixed with carved white bone and a bit of dangling chain in the gorgeous gold-filled design. Score the white wonder right here at Rena Tom.

Posh Pachyderm

We're smitten with sweet little elephants these days. In fact, we want to adopt one, but have a sneaking suspicion our landlord wouldn't dig the sentiment. Pachyderm hater! So as not to be evicted, for the time being, we'll simply sport the cutest necklace in the world, this Jami Rodriquez peanut and elephant necklace. You can score one too right here at Luv Charlie.

Cuteness Couture

We've been on a cute craze lately and it doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon. Perhaps we should move to Japan, where we hear adorableness is…adored. Hmm. Back to the cuteness at hand, or should we say neck, as this painstakingly darling birdie and cloud necklace sends us into a tizzy. The cloud is hand-cut from a shrinky dink for goodness sake and the birdie is a vintage enameled charm, plus it's just $22 at Pixel Girl Shop. While there, check out the super fab photo cuff – a great gift for hip moms or even for yourself. Simply crop your pics, slide them in and rawk that bad boy around your wrist. It's also just $25 at Pixel Girl Shop. Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Southern Charm

In a former life, BussBuss lived la vida tranquil in a small town in South Carolina. This was before the beauty that is online shopping really existed and the only option for scoring something one of a kind was to hunt through the local Salvation Army – it was a tiny, tiny town, my friends. Which is why we had extra special appreciation when we met Nicky Fitzgerald, a South Carolinian jewelry designer creating playful, fun and limited edition jewels. And with Mother's Day less than two weeks away, we can't help but think that her necklaces would make a great gift for Mom, and um, we wouldn't mind a few for ourselves either. They'd so easily turn a plain tee or button down into a much more faboo ensemble. Our faves? The five-strand turquoise and peach coral necklace that is so resort-town Lilly Pulitzer, the playful mixed agate teardrops that remind us of jelly beans, and the chunky turquoise and black jade necklace that looks like robin's eggs. Browse the whole collection and find your own source of southern comfort at It Fitz.

Lucky Charms

We're gonna pass on the green beer and pinching rituals this St. Patty's Day and instead focus on something much more rewarding than embarrassing memories: delicious jewelry. Buying a piece of green-inspired jewelry is a new tradition for us and one we think everyone should adopt too (okay, maybe not everyone, but anyone who gives a pinch about their style anyway). In our latest search for the perfect piece, we couldn't stop drooling over the gems at Heidi J. Hale. The mouth-watering photography alone is worth a trip to the online shop, but we're really drawn to the simple elegance of it all. Pieces are modern without being trendy -- special, yet can be worn everyday. Right now, we're trying to decide between the jade necklace ($32), the apple green-dyed turquoise earrings ($36) or the gaspeite ring ($20). With prices so incredibly reasonable, we just might scoop up all three of these lucky charms. Scout out your faves and start a tradition of your own at heidijhale.com.

Resting on Your Laurels

Sometimes, for us fashion lovers, things can start to look all the same (proof: who doesn't own a piece of wood jewelry?). Which is why it's so refreshing to see handmade designs, jewelry designs no less, by someone who seems to be drilling and stringing to the beat of her own drummer. Our recommended rx to rid yourself of fashion boredom: the Laurel Denise Simply Stated collection, a delicate mixture of translucent glass, silver or gold chain and paper with inspirational (but not cheesy) phrases like 'she lived life in her own little fairytale' and 'I wish you bluebirds in the spring.' Gorgeous gifts for that lucky someone, Laurel also takes custom orders for those looking to really personalize their piece of art. Take a piece of your favorite collection home, from $30 and up, at laureldenise.com.

Lovely Lulet

Jewelry designers seem to be as ubiquitous as Paris Hilton these days, so when we finally came across one who's creating fresh and unexpected designs, we nearly did a back flip in our ballet flats! Perhaps proving that two heads are better than one, Lulet is actually twin sisters Michelle and Wendy Arbeit, and their creations are a graceful mix of feminine and bold. We're huge fans of the Urban Grace collection, which includes pieces like the Suspension Ring, inspired by the Brooklyn Bridge ($100), and the Manhattan Sunrise Square Ring, which mimics the warm, soft glow of the rising sun over the staccato of New York City's skyscrapers ($185). Coordinating earrings and other pretty collections available at lulet.com.

March 10, 2005 : Silver Linings

So BussBuss has developed a new little obsession lately: poufy white clouds. It all started when watching Project Runway and seeing Heidi Klum in those dazzling diamond cloud earrings. Sure, some may call them flowers or even clovers, but BussBuss distinctly read them as clouds. Mesmerized, the big double B even went on to design lovely belts with cloud-shaped buckles of her own. And now she can't help but covet this hand-cut cloud necklace by dottyspeck ($54). In the market for a little silver lining of your own? Visit the uber-chic Portland-based motelgallery.com.
