The Best Grapefruit Margaritas

best margaritas recipe; the best grapefruit margaritas recipe; recipe for grapefruit margaritas; best recipe for margaritas

Yesterday we kicked off our Summer Entertaining Series with The Best Guacamole Ever. Today, let’s talk margaritas! When we were living in Palm Springs, we had a grapefruit tree in our backyard. And an orange tree, too. It truly was a dream come true. Especially when we realized we had a bottle of tequila (tequila!). Combined with an aversion to going to the grocery store and just the right mix of laziness and ingenuity, this is how Fred Baby invented the recipe for The Best Grapefruit Margaritas. I hope you love these as much as we do!

Here’s what you’ll need: (serves 2)

1 ruby red grapefruit, halved, with the juice squeezed into a bowl

3 shots of tequila

2 shots of orange juice (if you have a fresh oranges, use them; otherwise orange juice from the carton will do the trick)

1 heavy sprinkle of coarse sea salt

How to make the best grapefruit margaritas:

1. Over a shaker filled halfway with ice, add the juice of one grapefruit. Add orange juice, tequila and salt. Shake like a Polaroid picture. Shake it. Shake it.

2. Salt the rim of your glass. (You can do this by running a slice of a lime around the rim of your glass or dunking the rim of the glass into a saucer of water. After, dip the rim into a saucer of coarse sea salt.) Fill each glass halfway with ice.

3. Pour mixture from shaker into each glass and voila, the best margaritas ever!

Pairs extremely well with The Best Guacamole Ever. Enjoy!

p.s. Speaking of Palm Springs, yesterday we escaped cold and gray LA for some much needed Vitamin D and are here soaking up the sun as we speak (er, type)! You can follow our instant updates on Instagram, or simpy tune in here to BussBuss where you can now see all of our pictures posted live as they’re happening in our blog feed. I’m excited to be able to share special moments from the day right in the moment, whether we’re home in LA or off on an adventure on the road or abroad. I love staying connected with you! I hope you enjoy this new feature, too. Be sure to let us know what you think in the comments xx.

Go Gold or Go Home

A few nights ago I had the pleasure of attending interior designer Kishani Perera’s book party at her Los Angeles shop Rummage for her new tome Vintage Remix: The Interiors of Kishani Perera.

I’d attended a Sephora + Pantone event earlier in the afternoon where I went more casual, but wanted to step it up in the glamour department — quite literally, as I knew actress and model Molly Sims would be at the book launch (Kishani designed Sims’ gorgeous residence).

I’ve learned my lesson not to stand next to tall beautiful blonds — at least not without really high shoes on, thankyouverymuch.

I decided on this creme brulee frock with chevron-patterned gold beading.

And then decided to go gold or go home with a glittering arm party.

Above are some snaps from the soiree, including (from l-r):  party-goers at Rummage; designer Kishani Perera and myself; my party-hopping partner in crime Jenny and I toasting with stripey straws; and, Kishani’s new book Vintage Remix, which you can scoop up here.

It was a beautiful evening made even sweeter with a night cap at Al Gelato, followed by curling up with the new issue of Domino. (Can we talk about how exciting that is?!).

{What I Wore: DRESS: Love Label c/o Very.com (no longer available but similar here); SHOES: Jeffrey Campbell Foxy platforms; BAG: Kate Spade (old but similar here); CUFF: Kristen McCloud c/o; BRACELET: Stella & Dot Luna Wrap Bracelet (can also be worn as a necklace) c/o; EARRINGS: Stella & Dot Sidewinder Studs c/o; RING:  Luc Kieffer (old but try eBay and here’s a similar option); NAIL POLISH: Sally Hansen Mint Sorbet; BLUSH: Sephora + Pantone Apricot Brandy blush c/o}

A Sweet Valentine’s DIY: Love Bucket

Darlings, I wanted to share one of my favorite DIY Valentine’s Day gift ideas with you, in case you are racking your brain trying to think of a way to show your Valentine how you feel (like I am!). I call this a Love Jar or Love Bucket and you simply fill a handsome jar with tiny heart-shaped love notes.

Here are the steps:

1. Find a jar and/or bucket in which to put your love notes. (I used a vintage decanter {similar} and silver bucket {similar} from my fave store in San Francisco, Past Perfect, but you can use whatever vessel strikes your fancy. I chose both a jar to put the love-note hearts in and a silver bucket so that my valentine, Fred Baby, had a place to put the notes he had read.)

2. Pick up a sheet or two of pretty paper. (I used Paris map wrapping paper from Paper SourcePapyrus and Kate’s Paperie also have great options. Be sure one side is blank so you can write on it!)

3. Cut out tiny hearts! (Or, use a heart-shaped punch, which is probably much easier. The number is up to you. I used our anniversary, 2/18, and cut out 218 hearts, which admittedly is a lot, but you could do whatever number means something to you and yours. Or, add a twist: Start with 14 for Valentine’s Day and then add a new one each day – that would be such a fun tradition!)

4. Use a pretty pen to jot down your favorite memories. Ideas of what to include: things you love about your Valentine, special dates, adventures, nicknames, inside jokes, or whatever you want to express (our Love Jar is filled with a lot of food references and travel adventures – big surprise!). It’s amazing how writing something as simple as “ancho fudge pie” or “San Marino snow” can bring back a flood of memories.

5. Deliver your Love Bucket to your love bucket! While it’s technically a gift for your valentine, it’s really such a gift to yourself, too, as you get to travel down memory lane with your favorite travel partner.

Do you have any favorite Valentine’s Day or anniversary gifts that you’ve given or received? Do tell, lovelies xx!
